STATES WORKS …

Much more than just a public service

It is not widely known that States Works is run as an independent organisation, with no direct funding from the States.  Our client base is drawn from a number of States Departments and private sector clients for whom we carry out a wide variety of work.  In fact, States Works is committed to the principles of any progressive business.

With an annual turnover of several million pounds any surpluses generated are ploughed back into the organisation to fund capital purchases and vehicle replacement.

Among our many achievements has been the purchase and financing of our depot at La Hure Mare, and the development of a purpose built workshop and office complex which provides the operational and managerial control centre for States Works, with fleet maintenance and servicing facilities located alongside.

In support of the above commitment, States Works are one of the few organisations within the Island to be ISO9001:2008 quality accredited. This highly respected, international quality award reinforces our commitment to quality and is independently audited by an off Island national accreditation body.

A Skilled Team

States Works employs a 200-strong team with decades of experience in the many disciplines essential to our clients and the smooth running of the Island's public services.  Their intimate knowledge of Guernsey’s infrastructure enables a proactive approach to problem solving and a fast and efficient response to routine and emergency situations.

We encourage all of our employees to develop their careers through further education, including apprenticeship training for school leavers.  This ensures that our skilled tradesmen pass on their valuable experience to the younger members of staff and that they, in turn introduce new techniques and materials so that States Works continues to develop.

A Commitment to Guernsey

Our street cleaning duties are the most noticeable of the many daily tasks undertaken, but in fact between 1 am and 10 pm each day our reliable workforce provides a whole range of services that the Island depends upon, operating for much of the time behind the scenes.

Out of hours we operate a call-out service ready to respond to any emergency.

Major incidents, such as a shipwreck, may occur perhaps once a decade more frequently, we are called out to over 300 minor incidents each year, ranging from oil spills on the road to the removal of a dead whale from the beach.

We offer a quality service to all of our clients, matching our skills to their individual needs and requirements.
