States Works
Island Wide Emergencies  Our History

States Works has been involved in just about every major incident to occur in the Island over the last 40 years.

Some would say that States Works are the Islands fourth emergency service, with our presence being requested at most major incidents.

Our involvement is varied to say the least, and can range from a simple clean up operation after an accident to providing staff and equipment to operate a vehicle wash facility in the case of a potential Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak.

In 1987, following the October hurricane, States Works had over half its workforce dedicated to clearing the Island's roads, parklands and green lanes.

Over the last 40 years States Works have been involved in all of the following major incidents:

  • Cobo Sea wall collapse - 1960's

  • Torrey Canyon, oil on beaches - 1967

  • President Garcia - 1967

  • Elwood Mead - 1973

  • The sinking of the Prosperity - 1974

  • Orion Oil Rig - 1978

  • Hurricane - 1987

  • Foot and Mouth epidemic - 2001

It is our intention to publish pictures of all the above on the web site, but unfortunately we only have a few in our archive records. If anyone has any pictures of these incidents - or indeed other photos that may have a States Works theme - and would be happy for us to use them on our web site, please contact the Manager Technical Support on 246263.
